As we move through this process, there are a number of things you can do to help City Council make the "right" decision around ridding SW Colorado of plastic bags and help move our community towards more responsible consumption.


Letters to the Editors are an important barometer to our elected officials, so please write. The more the merrier.

1) Write Letters to the Editor to both The Durango Herald and The Telegraph. It can be the same letter. Posting websites are listed below

Americans alone throw away over 100 billion bags a year.

Every hour, approximately 200,000 plastic bags are landfilled and may take 1,000 years to break down. For the plastic bags that become litter, rain washes them into bodies of water where they threaten the lives of avian and marine species that can die from consuming or choking on the bags. Plastic pollution travels through our local waterways, eventually reaching the global oceans. On average, 46,000 pieces of plastic are swirling in each square mile of our oceans.

The impacts of plastic bag pollution have ignited a global movement to dramatically reduce the amount of disposable plastic shopping bags. Promoting reusable bags and plastic bag recycling are just one of the many ways to protect our waterways and wildlife. Durango Bag It! works with the public, local, and regional governments to reduce the plastic bag pollution.

The Durango Bag It! campaign is a grassroots effort by local residents to promote sustainability by passing a ban on single-use plastic checkout bags in the beautiful town of Durango, Colorado!

Our mission is to promote reusable bags and remove single-use plastic bags from our community.  To this end, we are raising awareness about the detrimental effects that plastic bags have on our environment and city infrastructure.  We also attempt to build partnerships with local businesses and work with the Durango City Council in order to reach a positive solution to the problems that plastic bags cause.

What can you do to help?  It’s easy to make a difference!

  1. Sign our petition!  Your support matters.
  2. Bring your own reusable bags every time you shop – say no to plastic bags!
  3. Tell others!  Write letters to the editor, communicate with your city council members, and tell your friends!
  4. E-mail us if you have questions about how you can get more involved!
